Obituary for Robert Gordon THORN

Robert Gordon THORN
THORN: Robert Gordon: of Pefferlaw, Ontario died peacefully at home on Sep. 19, 2014 in his 94th year. Born March 31, 1921 in Millbrook to George and Annabelle (Nicholson) Thorn, he was the first child of ten children. Raised on the home farm, Gordon left to work at neighboring farms and then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force #R187978 in 1942, serving in Prince Rupert and Langara Island, BC. Gordon and Hilda married in 1946 and raised their four children in Unionville, Ontario.Gordon was self-made man. He started delivering milk and groceries in Toronto and then he purchased a mobile feed mixer and built the business to five grinders. He then brought the feed mill in Newmarket and Stroud to formulate feed for animals. This is where his talents grew. Without any formal training, Gordon began custom formulation of feeds, based on the unique needs of the farm and herd. His knowledge has grown into a legacy of feed formulation that is on the edge of new approaches to animal health. Upon his retirement Gordon put his knowledge of health into counseling people in the use of vitamin and mineral supplements for health challenges and terminal illness. It was one of his last tasks to create a handout on “Your Health is in your Hands”. Gordon will be missed by his family and friends as well as many others for his independence of thought and life and his willingness to help nature and people wherever he could.
“What is the terror of death, That we die our work incomplete.
What is the joy of life, To die knowing our task is done”.
Survived by wife Hilda (Smith) and his children Gwen Turner (Ed Joseph) of Minden, Arlene Thorn (Joe O’Hearn) of Thunder Bay, Carson Thorn (Margaret Thorn) of Woodville and Christine Smith of Oakwood. Also 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren pre-deceased by one great grandchild.
