The Beaverton Fall Fair Weekend brings many memories of Nana working tirelessly to prepare all her entries. It was a yearly ritual to acquire the Fall Fair Book, make a steaming cup of red rose tea to sip on while perusing through the classes and circling all the sections she planned to compete in. She would then adventure to Foodland wearing the famous red mink coat to purchase the required ingredients – Monarch flour, Crisco, Kellogg’s Rice Krispies (we needed to cut out the recipe on the box to attach to the entry), lemons that weren’t too hard, butter, etc. Nana would setup the kitchen the night before and retire to the porch with a “good” drink to watch the sun set over the lake and would rock in her chair and mumble to herself as she went over her baking plan in her head.
The baking marathon would begin and the tell-tale smell of lemon zest and butter tarts would waft throughout the cottage along with her distinct shrill whistle as she shuffled around the kitchen with the am talk radio babbling away in the background. Any attempts for taste testing were thwarted and we would be chased from the kitchen and the door bolted behind us.
Over the years, we were privileged to observe the rivalry yet also comradery among the competitors and we counted our blessings that Nana was still able to compete up until 2014 where she triumphed with a total ribbon count of 13/14 entries and a winnings of $51. She was tickled pink with her results and proudly showed off her ribbons to anyone who stopped in to visit.
The Beaverton Fair has brought years of purpose and passion to Nana every Fall and so much joy to our family to experience the excitement of her success. Beaverton will celebrate their 164th Fall Fair on September 15-17th with the theme of “Canada Proud, Country Wide”. With Nana’s death is a bittersweet end to a ritual that has left many lasting memories.
Forever in my heart, love you Nana.
